How long does it take to learn SEO?

Answer

The fundamentals of SEO take two to four weeks of part-time study; the free Ahrefs beginner course is two hours and Semrush Academy's main courses total about six. Being able to rank a site you own takes three to six months of doing it, because the feedback loop is slow. Keeping up with AI search (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity) is not a course you finish; the rules change monthly and the people who stay current are testing continuously.

Timelines by goal

Get a site of your own ranking for something3 to 6 monthsA real site, the free courses above, and patience: Google takes weeks to reflect changes, so each lesson takes a month to verify

Why the honest answer is a range

Three things move the number. First, whether you have a site to practice on: reading about SEO without a site is like reading about swimming. Second, the feedback delay: a change you make today shows in search results in two to eight weeks, so a beginner gets roughly one lesson a month from their own site. Third, which SEO you mean: the on-page and technical fundamentals have been stable for a decade and can be learned quickly; the AI-search layer changed in 2025 and 2026 and is still being worked out in public.

The one shortcut that works

Have something to measure. Every fast learner we have seen owned a site, a client or an employer's site and could see the result of each change. Every slow learner was collecting certificates. If you have no site, build one this week, before you buy anything.

If that did not solve it

If you want the courses side by side with prices and refund terms, the editor's buyer's guide compares the nine that are still for sale: best SEO courses compared.
