Which SEO certification is best?
Semrush Academy's certification is the best SEO certificate to hold in 2026: it is free, the exams are 10 to 15 questions, it is valid for one year, and it is the one most often listed on CVs. HubSpot's SEO certification no longer exists; it was retired in 2026 and replaced by a free AEO Fundamentals certificate about answer engines. Ahrefs' free certification covers the Ahrefs tool, not SEO in general. None of the paid communities we cover issue a certificate that anyone checks.
The three certificates
| Certificate | What it proves | Cost | Exam | Valid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush Academy SEO courses | You completed a Semrush course on SEO fundamentals, on-page and AI search, or keyword research | Free | 10 to 15 questions, three attempts | One year |
| HubSpot AEO Fundamentals | You completed a 2 hour 20 minute course on answer engine optimization (replaced the SEO certification in 2026) | Free | Certification exam | Not stated on the course page |
| Ahrefs Certification | You can use the Ahrefs tool (67 questions, 75% pass mark) | Free, Ahrefs account needed | 1 hour, three attempts, 15-day wait between | One year |
What a certificate does and does not do
Our editorial view: a certificate rarely decides a hire. It shows you finished a structured course, which is worth something for a first junior role or a career change, and nothing for anyone who already has results to show. Employers and clients ask what you ranked and what happened to traffic. Take the certificate for the structure of the course, not for the badge, and put a site with numbers next to it.
Why the paid products do not have one
AI SEO Rainmakers' Foundations course ends with a scored AI-visibility baseline of your own site rather than a certificate, and says so. Tech SEO Pro issues a certificate of completion. The Blueprint Training, Traffic Think Tank and AI Ranking issue none. The products aimed at working practitioners assume you will be judged on results.
